You can take the mag off and spin it by hand, holding a plug lead (with insulated pliers) close to the body. This should produce a spark easily. If not, check that the points are clean and gapped at 12 thou' minimum on both cams. However, if it an old mag, all this will tell you is that it works under no load. Re-building by a reputable rebuilder is the only long term answer - and well worth the money for the ease of mind. It is not always easy to find good rebuilders even in the UK - I don't know about NZ - but they should know how to build the mag from scratch rather than putting it together the same way it came apart (I have had a number of mags that were internally timed incorrectly and rewiring and remagnetising doesn't solve the problem then) Best wishes.
