What size are the front tyres?

Although "export" cars had bigger tyres, really, 4.00x17 are the best to retain delightful steering. Remember, the car was designed for B.E. tyres of miniscule section.

My 1936 tourer was dreadful with 4.50x17 fronts, but is fine with the above 4" section ones.

Also, everything must be very regularly lubricated, as per the seemingly ridiculous original maintenance schedule, or it all goes tight. I know, because I ignore it too and everything gets stiff. The other thing is to keep the box loose. If you have turned it (the gear) around 120 degrees, it must be ground in ad naseum, or it loads up when it all gets back on the ground. 1-2 inches free play may feel dreadful, but its legal usually and trying to take it out causes the problems you state, too.

Hope this help!

Barry.
