My blown Ulster special has a bog standard chummy dynamo converted to 2 brush and regulated by a chip hidden in the back of the original cut-out. I run a 12 volt (ex 2CV) battery. I use 36/36w halogen bulbs (from Andrew Brock) in the head lights. There are 5x5w sidelights and shared brake/indicator (2x21w)plus two tiny 21w motor cycle halogen indicator bulbs at the front. The dynamo copes well - if you do the sums you have to try hard to get a 10 amp demand at 12 volts - and it's fantastic to be able to see and know that you're not going to run out of battery. 1250 miles later, mostly at night, only snag was when the (second-hand) chip blew at 1000 miles. There was a good excuse for this that I won't bore you with. Starter motor has run on 12v for many years anyway. Recommended!
