Thanks Barry &Bruce There is no damage to the alloy steering box. In the steering boxes which I have seen the worm is attached to the column by castellations on the end of the column. These castellations are peened into similar castellations on the end of the worm and are the only method of fixing the worm to the column. The initial peening obviously stresses the castellations and encourages the fatigue failure. Very disconcerting. The first time it happened I was in the middle of a driving test and ended up in the side of a marshal's car! Sorry for being so long winded. Regards
