This confirms my opinion that most MOT Testers, even friendly ones, no longer know a whole lot about vintage machinery. Try explaining to him that the key features of the design are that the free play should be adjusted out, but that spring compression ( I adjust it until the spring is about half compressed) is needed to stop the thing breaking, and that the really important thing is that the end cap slot hasn't worn to the extent that the drag link can come off the ball pin.
