Thank you to everyone on their ideas for the ‘Broken Crank?’ problem I posted last year. I have finally managed to find the time to get round to looking at it. I did have to take the body off - with a few mods I will be able to simplify the task so it should be well under a couple of hours if ( when) I have to do it again. Engine is now on the bench: Flywheel came off no problem! Once the large nut on the end of the crank had been removed it effectively fell off. Problem now identified as a broken woodruff key. From my A7 Companion, I suspect the flywheel should have been tighter than this – was the reason some of you mentioned ‘lapping in’ and Loctite? If so, how do I lap in? There were no locking tabs under the clutch bolts – A& companion mentions these Only one un-identifiable bit. Tab of metal about an inch long similar in shape to a chunky version of an old ring-pull – a circle with 2 tabs off it found next to flywheel – what might it be? I also note that a bit of the front main bearing housing is no longer with use but realise that this is not unusual – how much is too much?

Looking forward to the responses and the next stage

Regards

Mike
