David, Big end bearings are tinned white metal straight on to the rods, as for starting it up after 35 years, "you pays your money and takes your chance" Many engines have been started without problems, however it depends on how much gunge has collected in the oil ways etc. If it was mine I would take it apart and have a good look, it is after all a very simple engine.
