Charles, You can see I don't look at the site very often! I fitted a 4-speed box onto an early coil engine for my Ulster special, using a 1930-1932 type direct starter motor which is inside the cockpit rather than in the engine compartment. The lid I made by cutting up two lids and welding in order to get the necessary offset of the gearlever boss. You have to carve away down to a feather edge the lid where it goes under the starter motor and use countersunk screws in this area to attach the lid to the box. You then have to crank the part of the gearlever inside the box so that it will engage the selector mechanism. I have been using the setup for 9 years now with no problems. It's fiddly to do and I did not record any dimensions. I lent the lid to Dave Mann in Stockport UK a few years ago and he did a very professional job of making one similar for his RN box saloon. Cheers, Dave Wortley
