Hello Martin, I am always surprised to hear of the problems people seem to have with oil leaks from the block to crankcase joint, advice always seems to be to put loads of "gunk" or two gaskets, all I have ever done is to use plain good fitting practice, make sure that both surfaces are clean and true, also check that the studs haven't pulled a ridge of metal up around their base, (incidentally I always put a "very" light countersink on the holes at the bottom of the block), one standard gasket with grease on both sides, use a short open ended spanner tighten down plus one flat each nut, I never have any leaks, I don’t leave any engine mounting bolts out, however I believe this may be advisable if the cars is used on rough ground or driven very hard as in racing, but for normal road motoring I would bolt the engine down to the chassis as intended. One last thing check that what you think is a leak, may in fact be oil mist coming out of the tappet cover and collecting and running around the crankcase joint. Regards Ian
