I have just rebuilt my MK1 Ruby engine following a rebore to +40 and fitted new baffles and yes then I could only travel 20 or so miles before complete oiling of the plugs took over.
I checked everything out but with no success. I then looked elsewhere and eventually found the main jet in the 26VA carb was a size 72 not the standard 57. I fitted a 57 jet and reset the carb and lo & behold no more oiling up of the plugs. So the answer may be that it's not always the most obvious reason which causes the fault.
