Thanks Stuart - that explanation would fit the bill. As you say - these small variations are a bit of a mystery. Having just finished installing a new steering column, I'm also struck by the ingenuity Herbert displayed in making things difficult to work on. Perhaps as acts of kindness to masochists like us?
