The topic, Austin seven brakes, will go on forever! Did you read John’s limerick a few days ago on this forum?

Well after looking at this for a few years and hearing all the past comments from our experts, here are my views:

1 – Original 7” brakes are very usable assuming the braking system is in tip top shape and you use the softest brake linings you can purchase. (I have no experience with standard early 6” systems but have heard hoar stories about them). Also, for Sevens other then specials, it is nice to keep things as original as possible.

2 – Modified systems such as the Boudenex (sp?) cable modification kit improves the braking and have most advantages that you try to gain by going hydraulic. Without all the hydraulic maintenance issues over the years to come.

3 – If you are modifying your brakes to go hydraulic (for a special etc), then as mentioned by Barry many things need to be considered not just adding the hydraulic brake cylinders. Firstly, if you are on historic registration, some clubs (mine included) ONLY approve certain brake modifications. In our case the preferred conversion is to MM Morris Minor (side valve) wheel cylinders. Most clubs here have a pattern for the backing plate modifications to replace late Seven backing plates. This should only be done if front end components are 100%. In my case I have fitted new 13mm king pins, all new HT nuts and bolts etc etc. It is VERY IMPORTANT to use of late radius arms. They are a much stronger heavier design and will handle the extra braking forces involved in going hydraulic. The condition of the radius arm ball, bolt and chassis mounting should also be looked at closely. So, as others have recommended, the first option above looks fairly attractive!
